Brown faces Commons with 'profound' regret

GORDON Brown has "profoundly" apologised for the loss of personal details of almost half the population as it transpired that teenagers could be left vulnerable to identity theft for years.

The Prime Minister said he regretted the "inconvenience" that has left 25 million people exposed to potential fraud after an HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) official copied the sensitive details to computer discs which were then lost in transit.

Zimbabwe: Mugabe Blasted for Human Rights Abuses At EU Summit

Zenawi jailed all the opposition leaders after his victory in 2005 and Yar'Adua was accused of rigging and using violence.

A statements from Human Rights Watch expressed scepticism over the sincerity of many African leaders who signed the document, saying they make commitments but do nothing.

Reed Brody of Human Rights Watch said: "The question is what difference is it going to make and what does it mean for Mugabe to sign the pledge for democracy agreement. It looks like some dictators just put pen to paper without much regard to what it means. They just did it to get the democracy and human rights issues out of the way."

Q&A: Offshore wind farms

They construct a platform, and the turbine is assembled on top of it.

Offshore wind turbines have big advantages over onshore ones. They can be built a lot bigger and there is a lot more wind out at sea rather than on land.

How do they work?

The technology is easily understandable: turbines are basically big windmills that use the energy of moving air to generate electricity.

Sensors on the turbine detect the wind direction and turn the blades into the wind. The blades then power a generator to convert the energy into electricity. Undersea cables then carry the electricity to land where it goes into the national grid.

Pvt publishers make hay as NCERT fails to supply books

The new NCERT textbooks of various subjects are yet to hit the stands in Chandigarh. The much talked about books, which promise to promote activity-based learning, reduce curricular burden and examination stress, are not available at any of the authorised stores, which sell NCERT books in the city. In fact, most parents have already purchased books available in the market printed by private publishers.

The CBSE had issued a circular to all affiliated schools in February informing them about the release of new books. However, most of the students, especially of junior classes, had already spent anything between Rs 1,200 and Rs 2,000 for buying books. The NCERT had also informed the CBSE that the textual material would be made available for use in the schools before the commencement of the academic session, but nothing had happened.

The BBB keeps an eye on your interests

When Susan Martin didn't receive the school pictures of her granddaughter she had paid for, she refused to give up empty-handed.

After calling the photo company multiple times and getting different excuses as to why she hadn't received the pictures, Martin said "enough." She went online to the Better Business Bureau and filed a complaint.

Not long after, she had the pictures.

"I know that they're the ones who got me my pictures," the Kennewick woman said.

Martin is one of hundreds of consumers who use the regional BBB office in Spokane each month to resolve complaints with businesses.

The organization serves as a bridge between consumers and businesses, offering services to promote an ethical marketplace where people can trust each other, officials said.
